Perquimans County Courthouse

Home of the oldest land deed in North Carolina

One of the oldest towns in North Carolina, Hertford was incorporated in 1758, primarily to serve as the county seat and commercial center for Perquimans County.

The Perquimans County Courthouse was established in 1852. Its Federal-style design makes it both unique and classic. The courthouse sits in the middle of downtown Hertford, giving it the effect that everything is centered around this building in an orderly fashion.

The courthouse takes you back to the 1800's on the outside as well as the interior. The courtroom is the "picture perfect" setting of how one would imagine an early courtroom scene. The judge sits at a large wooden desk with the United States flag on his/her right, and the North Carolina flag on his/her left. The observers of the case sit in fold out wooden "auditorium-style" chairs. The jury box holds 12 numbered wooden chairs.

The oldest recorded property deed in North Carolina is in the Perquimans Deed Registry.

There are antique postcards of the courthouse in Hertford: It's About Time!
